چکیده

Although a decade of microlensing searches towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has detected 13− 25 possible microlensing events, the nature and the location of the lenses, being either halo machos or LMC stars, remains a subject of debate. The star-star lensing models generically predict the existence of a small population (more than ∼ 5%) of stars with a spatial and kinematic distribution different from the thin, young disc of the LMC. Here we present the results of a large spectroscopic survey of the LMC, consisting of more than 1300 radial velocities measured accurately with the 2dF instrument. In this large sample, no evidence is found for any extraneous population over the expected LMC and Galactic components. Any additional, kinematically distint, population can only be present at less than the 1% level. We discuss the significance of this finding for the LMC self-lensing models.

Towards a consistent model of the Galaxy I. Kinematic properties, star counts and microlensing observations

We examine the most recent observational constraints arising from i) small-scale and large-scale Galactic dynamical properties, ii) star counts of population I and II stars at faint magnitude and iii) microlensing experiments towards the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic centre. From these constraints, we determine the halo and disk stellar mass functions and stellar content down to the b...

Resolving the Nature of the Lmc Microlensing Event Lmc-5

We present the results from an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope High Resolution Camera data for the Large Magellanic Cloud microlensing event MACHO-LMC-5. By determining the parallax and proper motion of this object we find that the lens is an M dwarf star at a distance of 578 −53pc with a proper motion of 21.39±0.04 mas/yr. Based on the kinematics and location of this star it more likely to ...

Microlensing Events of the Lmc Are Better Explained by Stars within the Lmc than by Machos

The recently reported microlensing events of the LMC have caused much excitement, and have been interpreted as due to ‘dark objects’ (MACHOs) in the halo of our Galaxy. It is shown here that the stars within the LMC play a dominant role as gravitational lenses and can indeed account for the observed events. For observations within the bar of the LMC, the probability of microlensing being caused...

Halo Lensing or Lmc Self Lensing? Insights from the Hst Cmd of Macho Microlensing Source Stars

The nature of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) microlensing is determined by the location of the microlensing source stars. If the source stars are in the LMC then LMC microlensing is predominantly halo-lensing, if the source stars are located behind the LMC, then LMC microlensing is dominated by self-lensing. We attempt to distinguish between source stars drawn from the average population of the L...

Recent Microlensing Results from the MACHO Project

We describe a few recent microlensing results from the MA-CHO Collaboration. The aim of the MACHO Project was the identification and quantitative description of dark and luminous matter in the Milky Way using microlensing toward the Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) and the Galactic bulge. We start with a discussion of the Hubble Space Telescope follow-up observations of the microlensing events t...
